Being, Thinking, Doing

This was an internship opportunity that entailed writing up chapter reviews and creating interactive exercises that correlate with my supervisor's, Mary Stewart, college success textbook, "Being, Thinking, Doing".

  • Editing Internship (ENC4942)"

Seeing that, I was feeling all the more motivated to gain some real-world experience in the field, despite my freshmen status. I applied to numerous instructional design internships across the nation and was faced with equally numerous rejections. On a whim, I cold emailed a professor who was listed as a contact for an outdated Internship Opportunity document. Turns out, she is now retired as a professor emeritus, but was nonetheless working on a project.

Mary Stewart was writing a college success textbook, "Being, Thinking, and Doing". She wasn't looking for interns...but she was looking for reviewers. I happened to have the demographics that matched what she was looking for: current student, peer instructor, English major. Well, I wasn't a professor nor an expert, but she wanted my input and I was happy to give it.

All in all, I reviewed her (at the time) current 145-page draft and sent in three multimodal documents with a total of 5.7k+ words, offering my insight on the content of each chapter. She was very grateful and we kept working together on "my" portion of the internship: the interactive exercises.

Designing Interactive Exercises

I was so excited at getting another instructional design opportunity that I initially lost of sight of the project. Stewart, my supervisor, guided me back on track, advising me on accessibility and aligning with the textbook.

Over Summer 2025, once I got into my groove and settled in a style, I worked on several exercises that corresponded with their respective chapters in the book, "Being, Thinking, Doing". I spent many nights experimenting in Canva with different strategies. Chapter 2 includes real life examples, chapter 6 involves dialogue options, and chapter 9 contains a flowchart. I wanted to emphasize storytelling and user choice.
